Starting today is the Capitala World Tennis Championship which takes place in the UAE. Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are top seeds for the three day, six man tournament and, as such, both get byes straight into tomorrow's SF matches.

Today Davydenko/Ferrer and Soderling/Wawrinka meet today in the first round of matches.

Davydenko leads Ferrer 2:1 on past meetings and after a stellar end to the regular season (winning the World Tour Finals in London) the Russian is the clear favourite. Ferrer, winless in 2009, will be looking for a better start to 2010 ... but might not find it here in the Middle East. Generally a good early season player, Davydenko (1/3) looks a solid call to win.

Soderling (2/5) is 1:1 with Wawrinka but the Swiss player was also without a win in 2009 and has become quite a frustrating player to back. The Swede has just enjoyed his best year on tour and that momentum should see him secure the win today.

The Hopman Cup starts Down Under tomorrow with Australia, Russia, Spain, Germany and Great Britain (including Andy Murray) all in action. We've got outright bets on this mixed team event as well.

And so Spain were crowned Davis Cup winners for the fourth time yesterday, and for a second straight year, after a comprehensive win over the Czech Republic. It also landed us one final ante-post winner of the year as Spain WON 2/1 were advised for the title way back in February.

Our latest preview flagged up the Spanish duo of Lopez/Verdasco as the most likely doubles winners, even if they faced the Czech's strongest pairing of Berdych/Stepanek (which they did), and their 7-6 7-5 6-2 victory handed the host nation a second straight title.

Can they make it three in a row? Well, their next campaign begins with a tie against Roger Federer's Swiss team - some way to begin their quest for a hat-trick of wins not achieved since the USA won the competition five years running from 1968-1972.

Saturday 5th December

A great first day for Spain in the final of the Davis Cup.

Rafael Nadal started with a 7-5 6-0 6-2 defeat of Tomas Berdych - who had chances early in the first set but once Rafa found his stride (and reeled of 13 consecutive games) the rubber was always going to go the way of the host nation.

However, Radek Stepanek was taken to level matters against David Ferrer and when the Czech player won the first two sets 6-1 6-2, the win looked little more than a formality. Then, of course, came the fightback. Ferrer, who has never lost in Davis Cup singles on clay, rebounded to win the last three sets 6-4 6-4 8-6 to seal a stunning win.

Spain now lead 2-0 and need to win only one of the three remaining matches to retain their title.

The doubles today will surely see the pairing of Verdasco/Lopez for Spain but the Czech's will probably ditch their initial twosome of Dlouhy/Hajek in favour of a last ditch attempt to save the tie, by going with the experience of Berydch/Stepanek. Either way we see the Spaniard's taking this rubber against demoralised opponents, thus finishing off the job a day early.

Doubts about the line-ups mean that the bookmakers won't be pricing this match up early but when they do, expect the Spanish duo to be strong favourites. They would have to be the recommendation.
