In the process, the Serb collected his 5th title of 2009 after previously landing tournaments in Dubai, Belgrade, Beijing and Basel. However, despite that success, the world No.3 still only ties with Rafael Nadal for second place on the roll of honour for the season.
Murray: Most titles in 2009
Top of the pile is Andy Murray. The Scot winning in Doha and Rotterdam early in the year, Masters Series titles in Miami and Montreal followed, as well as success in London and Valencia. Six titles for Murray, making a total of 14 in his career to date, and no doubt plenty more to follow in 2010.
Roger Federer may only have won four titles, his joint worst year since 2002, but that did include the French Open and Wimbledon crowns. Few complaints, surely, from the Swiss player as a result. Nikolay Davydenko also won four titles.
Next come Del Potro and Tsonga (both 3 wins) followed by Cilic, Stepanek, Robredo and Montanes (all with 2 wins) and then no fewer than 26 players who tasted victory on just one occasion.
First-time winners
For us form students, the interesting fact to note is that just five players throughout the whole of 2009 won a title for the first time - Bellucci (Gstaad), Chardy (Stuttgart), Garcia-Lopez (Kitzbuhel), Ram (Newport), Becker (s’Hertogenbosch). That’s a mere 8% of the 64 main tour events contested this year, all at the lowest ATP World 250 level.
When considering a tournament this is well worth bearing this in mind, novice winners are few and far between. Moreover, when they do occur it tends to be at run-of-the-mill events where most of the big guns are absent.
Established players with few career wins
Also, interesting to see how many top players have won comparatively few events - Radek Stepanek and Robin Soderling with just 4 wins apiece, Fernando Verdasco just 3 titles - these are established players not developing talents.
Worthy of note are the non-winners. Guys like Stanislas Wawrinka, James Blake, David Ferrer, Philipp Kohlschreiber, Juan Monaco - all players in and around the top 30 who failed to post a win in 2009.
This kind of data is important when studying outright markets and is something this service utilises in selecting winners like Djokovic. To sign up for 2010 membership click 2010 Outright Tennis Bets.
